The Apple Watch is a real product that people can buy right now, but even before Apple unveiled the device, Nokia had its own plans for a smartwatch. And it looks strikingly familiar. According to a Tumblr post that was published recently, and discovered by Evan Blass, Nokia was working on a smartwatch that leveraged the power and design aesthetic of Windows Phone, while making it as colorful as possible. The watch, which had its marketing material published by a designer at Microsoft named Pei-Chi Hsieh, was apparently codenamed “Moonraker,” and it was actually quite close to being launched. The report published by The Verge indicates that Nokia was showing it off to potential customers at Mobile World Congress 2014, but that it was ultimately killed off by Microsoft when the company acquired Nokia’s mobile divisions. Microsoft also decided to kill the Moonraker because of the Band, which Microsoft had been planning for quite some time. According to the report, Microsoft believed that the Band had more functionality, so it opted for the smart wearable rather than Nokia’s smartwatch. The Moonraker had sensors, including one to turn on the display when the watch was lifted and to turn off when it was lowered, and it had apps for email, contacts, messaging and more. One thing certainly worth noting is just how colorful the Moonraker is, especially in its bands, ranging from vibrant colors like orange and green. A black option was apparently also included. The Moonraker is an interesting looking device, and it’s hard to miss the similarities between this canceled device and the Apple Watch. It would have been quite interesting to see how the Moonraker would have fared in the market had it ever been able to get that far. What do you think of it?
